The New York Power Authority's (NYPA) Vision 2020 strives to bring new technologies and new business models to its customers. NYPA is exploring opportunities to advance this vision and accelerate state energy plan goals by helping its 51 muni and co-op customers harness DERs in innovative ways. NYPA engaged Vrinda to help it achieve key strategic objectives. Vrinda delivered the following:

Vrinda is helping with NYPA Edge a program to implement value based DER business models with NYPA customers and building a NY REV market based approaches

Support development of NYPA Edge architecture and roadmap

Prepared a white paper outlining key drivers, opportunities, benefits, values and platform capability architecture for NYPA in implementing REV.

Established a high-level model to estimate DER value streams, and used the model to identify DER values for muni/state customers.

Developed NYPA Edge four dimensional platform architecture to engage with NYPA and Municipal customers with value based product and services

Burlington Electric (BED), a 100% renewable Muni, appointed Vrinda to lead Utility 2.0 transformation and create a net-zero utility with DERs. Vrinda created the following value:

Developed and assessed BED's existing DSP capabilities.

Developed a roadmap for Utility 2.0 transformation, considering organizational capabilities, technology landscape, and city goals and priorities.

Developed DER valuation and financing models and evaluated the system value of different DER options.

Identified the DERs that can have the maximum impact towards BED's goals with minimum costs.

Helped redefine BED's Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) approach to include DER-led forecasting and planning.

Green Mountain Power (GMP), a leader in DER innovation, hired Vrinda to find alternative business models and technologies to manage distributed resources. In this project, Vrinda:

Conducted an assessment of GMP’s capabilities to understand how GMP can best become an energy services provider.

Identified platform and DER technologies, control strategies, and integration options to manage DERs.

Cemig Distribuição S/A (Cemig) is one of the largest electric utilities in Brazil with over 12 million customers. Cemig serves customers in the Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro states. Vrinda is conducting technical assistance to Cemig in a project funded by the United States Trade and Development Agency, "Development of Large Scale Interconnection, Integration, and Management Capability for Distributed Energy Resources." The project will achieve the following objectives:

Define the scope of anticipated DER penetration, specifically for solar PV interconnection within Cemig's distribution network.

Quantify the impact of large scale DER penetration on the distribution network.

Benchmark and prepare case studies from U.S. utilities detailing the impact of integrating and interconnecting large scale renewables on utility distribution networks.

Present tools, products, and services available from U.S. companies and vendors to address technical and operational challenges associated with large scale penetration of DERs.

Develop the scope of technical, business, regulatory, and operational requirements associated with large scale penetration, interconnection, and integration of DERs.

Prepare the specifications and functional design for a Distributed Energy Resources Management (DERMS) platform and an Advanced Distribution Analytics (ADA) system.
